Garmin Incident Detection Review: Is it Best?

Incident detection is a new feature added to Garmin wearables to ensure the safety of the user. Apple watches Series 4 and later also have a similar feature called fall detection. So, Garmin is not the only smartwatch brand to offer this feature.

How does Garmin crash detection work?

In case of a fall, your Garmin watch will detect this and activate an emergency alarm. If it isn’t canceled in a few seconds, the watch sends SOS messages to the emergency contacts saved on the Garmin Connect App along with your name and current location via the LiveTrack location tracking feature.

You may manually send an emergency SOS by long pressing the left side button on your Garmin watch. But it is supported only on a few devices such as Fenix 5 Series, 6 Series, Forerunner 645, etc.

How to Set up Emergency Detection on Garmin Watch?

We do not require this feature every day; however, setting up this feature is highly recommended because an emergency can occur at any time. To set it up, you need to go through the following steps:

  1. Make sure that your watch is connected to the Garmin watch.
  2. Locate and open the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone
  3. Now open the menu and locate “Saftey and Tracking.”
  4. Tap on it and now select ” Safety Features.”
  5. Now select “My Information.”
  6. Input your details here
  7. Now go back and tap on “Add Emergency Contact.”
  8. Now choose the emergency contact(max. 3 contacts) from the list of phone numbers. If contacts are not listed, tap on the menu(3 dots in the upper right corner) for the options to Choose Phone Contacts or Create Contacts.
  9. Done!

As I mentioned earlier, this incident/accident detection feature is not available on all Garmin watches. Also, some criteria need to be met for the safety feature to work. So what are these criteria?

Criteria for Garmin Incident Detection

  1. Your watch must support incident detection, and this feature must be turned on in the Garmin Connect App.
  2. Incident detection only supports some selected outdoor activities only. This includes running, biking, and hike.
  3. It will not work with the apps that you downloaded from the Garmin Connect App.
  4. Your smartwatch must be connected to a smartphone, and it must have a cellular connection. With that said, if you are using a Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE, then the watch can send an emergency notification with its cellular connection. Here is everything you should know about fall detection in Forerunner 945 LTE
  5. Your watch must be able to track your location with GPS to send the location details to the emergency contacts. If the location data is not available at the time of the incident, the watch will send the location as soon as the watch starts to connect with the GPS.

Please be noted that the Garmin watches will not automatically call 911 or local emergency services.

Is Garmin Incident Detection Available on All Garmin Watches?

Garmin Incident detection is not available on all Garmin devices, but it is available on some mid-range and high-end devices as follows:

  1. Garmin Fenix 6 Series
  2. Garmin Forerunner 945
  3. Garmin Fenix 5 Series
  4. Forerunner Series such as 45, 45S, 245 and 645
  5. Garmin Tactix
  6. Vivoactive 3 Music
  7. Garmin Enduro
  8. Forerunner 745
  9. Venu 2 Series
  10. Venu Sq
  11. Vivoactive 4 and 4S
  12. Descent Mk2 and Mk 2S

In addition to this, some Garmin Edge devices also have incident detection, and to use this feature, the device should be connected to a smartphone with cellular connectivity.

Garmin Incident Detection vs. Apple Watch Fall Detection

If we compare the Apple Watch’s fall detection with the incident detection feature on Garmin, the Apple watch has a clear edge.

Apple Watch Fall Detection works in any situation irrespective of what activity you are doing or what apps you are using. On the other hand, incident detection on a Garmin device will work if you are doing certain built-in apps for biking, running, or hiking.

Another thing about the Apple Watch fall detection that made me love this feature more than others is its ability to call 911 or local emergency services.
